Strolling through the streets of San Francisco, we step into a world of color as we take in a mosaic masterpiece at every turn. Our city is colorful and rich in history! Each step tells a tale, each scene paints a memory. Who else is in love with our daily urban canvas? You’re in luck. Get ready to be dazzled by the newest masterpiece to arrive at The East Cut and steps from Jasper – the Lansing Stairway, a stunning tiled stairway by the incredibly talented Wilma Wyss!

Wilma Wyss is a mosaic artist in San Francisco Bay Area ​whose work features unusual materials and nuanced colors. Wilma designs, fabricates, and installs ​architectural mosaics for public and private spaces.​

Wilma was born in Washington, D.C. to Swiss parents. When she was 10 to 13 years old, she lived with her family in West Africa. As a young adult, she studied illustration at Rhode Island School of Design and received a BFA in graphic design from California College of the Arts.

After working as a freelance print designer for two decades, Wilma began creating abstract sculptures in concrete and mosaic in 2007. She developed her methods through a combination of self-teaching, experimentation, and classes. Wilma’s work has been shown in over 50 shows nationally, and won several awards. She has participated in over a dozen open studio events.  Wilma has taught mosaic art at Esalen Institute in Big Sur, Studio 9 in Oakland, and for groups retreats.

​Wilma’s site-specific mosaic artwork has been commissioned by Kaiser Hospital in Oakland, CA, as well as the Esalen Institute, in Big Sur, CA. She has created and installed mosaics in bathrooms, kitchens, and gardens in Bay Area private residences. Wilma has also designed, fabricated, and installed numerous outdoor mosaics in public parks in the San Francisco Bay Area.

We cannot wait to take a walk on the artsy side and be captivated with every step. The Lansing Street stairway goes from Essex Street to the ends of Lansing Street and Guy Place. Originally created straight, the stairway was later modified. Around the time the Embarcadero Freeway was built in the 1950s, Essex Street was widened and at this time the stairway was made into an L shape along the retaining wall on the east side of the street.
