Exploring the San Francisco Ferry Building
Sitting along the picturesque San Francisco waterfront is one of the City’s most iconic building, The San Francisco Ferry Building. Less than 1 mile from your front door at Jasper, the iconic structure has a long and rich history of adapting to the current needs of the residents of San Francisco.
Opening in 1898, the Ferry Building became the transportation focal point for anyone arriving by train. From the Gold Rush until the 1930s, arrival by ferryboat became the only way travelers and commuters – except those coming from the Peninsula – could reach the city. When personal cars became more prevalent, the Ferry Building lost a bit of its transportation appeal and the iconic structure housed office and businesses before its recent renovation into the building we know today. Now, the Ferry Building Marketplace is a people’s marketplace serving residents and travelers alike where shops large and small celebrate food in all its forms.
Whether you are shopping for wares or in search of some amazing food, the Ferry Building doesn’t disappoint. It’s a great venue to spend an afternoon or a leisurely weekend day. Grab a bite-and-run meal at Cowgirl Sidekick and Out the Door. For those looking for a more sit-down experience, enjoy a variety of different culinary venues such as Gott’s Roadside, Hog Island Oyster Company, The Slanted Door, Vive La Tarte and El Porteño Empanadas.
After your meal you can walk off those calories while perusing artisan vendors such as The Gardner, Glassybaby, Benedetta, Heath Ceramics, and the ever-popular Book Passage. Grab a new book and read a chapter or two while watching the activities of the waterfront as commuters and visitors connect via the ferry service. It’s a great place to relax and just take in the scenery. And, of course, any time of day is the perfect time for your favorite caffeinated beverage courtesy of Blue Bottle Coffee or Peet’s Coffee & Tea.
Satiate that sweet tooth with tasty treats served up at Cheesquakes, Donut Farm, Recchiuti Confections, Miette Patisserie, Dandelion Chocolate and Humphry Slocombe.
