SoMa and FiDi’s Secret Rooftop Parks: Views Almost as Good as Jasper’s

Let’s be honest, San Francisco has oodles of spectacular public parks from Dolores Park to Golden Gate Park, but it also has its fair share of amazing secret rooftops in the Financial and SOMA districts. Privately-owned public open spaces (POPOS) are publicly accessible spaces in forms of plazas, terraces, atriums, small parks, and even snippets that are provided and maintained by private developers – which means these privately maintained little gems are open for your picnicking pleasure. Some of these rooftop treasures offer views almost as good as Jasper’s…almost. Check out the map of some of San Francisco’s best secret spots.

Where: 343 Sansome St
What: This 15th floor open space has excellent views of surrounding buildings and streets, as well as the San Francisco Bay. This secret spot is one of the FiDi’s best kept secrets, and it’s also been called downtown’s best outdoor lunch spot. It has various types of seating and landscaping including 18 chairs, 50 linear seats on planter box sizes. It also has art in the form of a large sundial. More than half of the Yelp reviews reveal that this gem is hardly ever crowded. The space is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
How: Walk into the lobby, pass the security guard, and get into one of the elevators to the 15th floor.

Where: 100 1st Street Sun Terrace
What: The terrace at 100 First Street catches the sun and houses some impressive unique sculptures placed into water features, has plenty of sculptured grass areas and plantings for you to wind down and enjoy the greenery during your lunch break. There’s aluminum tables and chairs sprinkled throughout the entire space. Yelpers say it’s mostly empty on weekends. The terrace is open 24/7.
How: Located on the roof of 100 1st Street’s parking garage, there is a 4-flight staircase leading to a terrace from the sidewalk.

Where: 1 Kearny Street
What: This 11th floor rooftop terrace has sweeping views of downtown, extensive views of Market St. as well as rooftop architecture of nearby buildings. Landscaping and 23 linear seats/bench seating support this space as well as a restroom.
How: To enter, first you have to sign in at the lobby, show your picture ID, then walk to the back and take the elevator to the 11th floor. (Yelpers say you may be read a quirky set of rules).

Where: 845 Market St; the Westfield Sky Terrace, Westfield Center Mall
What: This extensive 9th floor rooftop space looks onto the dome of the mall and has views of the western skyline and sunlight. There are chairs, linear seats and benches for lounging. It’s only opened during business hours.
How: Yelpers agree this is a tricky spot to find. To get to the terrace you need to enter 835 Market Street, right next door to the Westfield Centre’s main entrance. Go by the reception desk and take the farthest left elevator. It is the only one that goes to the 9th floor, which is where the Sky Terrace is located. You can always ask the guards for help.

Where: 50 Post St., Crocker Galleria Roof Terrace
What: The Crocker Galleria Roof Terrace has lots of shrubbery, benches, flowering plants in larger planters, a great view, plenty of seating, and a fountain accessible from the top floor of the Crocker Galleria. It overlooks Market Street with great views of the surrounding skyscrapers, perfect for soaking up some sunshine.
How: Take the escalators to the third floor, turn left, and look for a hallway that says “Garden Terrace”.

We’ve shared a few of the hidden treasures the city holds, it’s up to you to grab a good book and take a stroll to the top and enjoy the views.
